Clark and Julia Do Boston
Last weekend, we had a rare opportunity to go into Boston and have fun! Every three months, the Boston Children’s Museum hosts “mask required” hours for kids like D - immunocompromised and in need of a higher safety threshold (also, parents going through cancer treatments, who are immunocompromised, etc. can more safely take their kids somewhere fun).
We’re grateful for the program, and off we went for the 8am opening.
When D was done having fun, we met one of his caregivers in Boston, where we transferred D off to her care, and she took him for a fun day at Castle Island.
Suddenly, Clark and I had FOUR HOURS to wander Boston!
We haven’t just had time to… kill … in years. I think the last time we just wandered lazily around a city was Paris in 2019.
So what did we do first? Kane’s Donuts, of course! Kane’s is a local chain, and we’d never had their yummy gluten free donuts.
We fixed that - fast!
One “Whoopie Pie” donut and a maple bacon one to share, and we quickly realized we couldn’t even finish them - they were filling and super sweet. But so delish!
We ate and looked at a beautiful fountain, people watching as we enjoyed just… being.
If we look tired, it’s because we got up at 6am on a Saturday. Ugh.
We walked down to Haymarket, which is a HUGE produce market in Boston. It’s not a farmer’s market in the classic sense. It’s all the produce from the produce center (the big distribution site in Chelsea) that is about to go bad, so vendors sell it at STEEP discounts.
There’s a fabulous scene in my upcoming One Night Stand book featuring Haymarket!
When I say cheap, I mean organic blackberries for fifty cents a container. Red peppers 5 for two bucks. CHEAP. We spent ten dollars on produce and came home with a feast.
But we couldn’t cook the produce in the city, so we went to Mother Juice, a cool smoothie and bowl bar in the Boston Public Market, and we ate outside. I had a “Keen-waaaaa” bowl and OMG, I’ve never eaten so much quinoa in one sitting.
Two donuts, 10 red peppers, 4 pints of blackberries, 2 pounds of strawberries, 1 pint of raspberries, and two super-healthy veggie bowls later, we headed off to get D from his own awesome adventure, and came home.
I hope you have some time for fun wandering in your life. <3
HOW OLD??
This is a sign I spotted in a local town, at a playground.
You Know You Live in Massachusetts When…
Your deck looks like this.
Happy pollen season. Achoo!
Looks like an amazing day for all of you x
OMG! I love love love Kane's GF donuts! My hubby bought me two dozen for my 50th birthday last Summer. I froze a dozen and ate them slowly(ish) over the next few months. We went to the Saugus location because it was a little less crazy pants than driving into the city. I'll have to get him to take me back for more. They're so friggin good!
Glad you got to take your kiddo to the Children's Museum. And that you and Clark got a "date" too.
Maybe the sign in the park was for vampires?? What kids are 512 years old!? 😆
My daughter has been so allergied by all the stupid pine pollen! I have this time of year when everything is yellow. And you can taste the pine pollen in the air. So gross! And no matter how frequently you wash it off things, it just comes back!
